Farm experience

Rubicon Farm is a 2000 acre working high country farm, with over 3000 sheep, and has been owned and operated for three generations by the same family. It is a mixture of flat river terraces and rolling high country hills running alongside the magnificent Waimakariri River Gorge.

The Tourist Centre is on the farm, and has been owner operated for the past 15 years with daily farm shows and jet boating activities available.

Chris and Del Lowe - your hosts

When you arrive you will be greeted by Chris and Del, owner-operators of Rubicon Valley Tourist Centre, or one of their friendly staff.

Chris and Del have lived a lifetime in rural New Zealand and have a detailed knowledge of the Rubicon Valley area.

Chris was brought up on a high country farm, so he has years of experience with farm animals. Also, his father taught him how to ride horses safely across hills and into wilderness areas. So Chris will guide you on our horse treks and entertain you at our delightful farmshow.

Del grew up at Rubicon Valley as a girl, and has lived in the area ever since. She has lots of experience with animals and administration, so she looks after customer service for the Tourist Centre.

Del also manages our Alpaca Wrap Company and designs and manufactures the products for our alpaca gift shop here at the Tourist Centre.

Ultimate Kiwi Experience

Both Chris and Del are passionate about animals and rural New Zealand life, and have created a professional and well organised tourist Centre for your activities in Rubicon Valley. Your Ultimate Kiwi Experience.

Springfield village

The lively little village of Springfield is alive with tourist activities, and offers accommodation, cosy cafes and a hotel. It's an ideal holiday destination.

In the past, Springfield was a bustling township.

During the 1870s two coal mines were worked nearby, and the town boasted seven shops and a Bank of New Zealand.

Then, in 1880, the railway arrived. This brought more people and more business. Finally, in 1923, the Otira railway tunnel was opened under the Southern Alps and Springfield became an important railway Centre on the completed Midland Line that linked Christchurch with the West Coast. For many years Springfield was home to railway employees and several times a day rail passengers were told there was "time for refreshments at Springfield!"

There still is. The world famous Tranz Alpine train stops each day at the historic Springfield railway station.
