Horse Treks in the Rubicon Valley

  1. Farmshow trek
    3 hours - 1.5 hours riding(Book now)
    Enjoy a horse trek and a farm show in one fun-filled 3 hour trek! The trek across Rubicon Valley farm on your way to the Rubicon Valley Tourist Centre allows you to see the lovely Waimakariri River, the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps and plenty of other sights. At the Tourist Centre, you can watch the sheep shearing show, have a go at shearing and watch the amazing dog display. You will also get to meet the farm animals, including alpacas, sheep, farm dogs and Blakey, the resident farm cat. After a delicious morning tea, you will ride back to base camp. This ride is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness and ability.

  2. Farm Ride
    One hour riding (Book now)
    This short but sweet trip lasts for one hour and is absolutely perfect for beginners. As you slowly traverse through the stunning Rubicon Valley high country, you will have the opportunity to take in the magnificent sights of this area. This is a relaxing, slow paced ride and is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness and ability.

  3. River Trail Ride
    Two hours riding (Book now)
    See the spectacular mountain views of the Torlesse basin as you trek through the valley to the Otarama lookout point over the magnificent snow fed Waimakariri Canyon whilst riding through our high country farm. Stop for refreshments and fantastic photo opportunities overlooking the Canyon before we ride down the terraces, following the musterers trail through the farmland. This ride is suitable for all ages, riding abilities and fitness but caters also for the more experienced riders with plenty of opportunities for some faster paced riding.

  4. Valley Trail Ride
    Two hour Trek (Book now)
    We cross the Midland Railway and amble along a cold mountain stream. There is a stop for refreshments, then we ride across the valley floor and ride out to view the mighty Waimakariri River Canyon before heading back home.
    Spectacular mountain views, native forest, photo opportunities at every turn. At the end of your ride you are welcome to help with brushing down and grooming your horse.

  5. River and Valley Trail Ride
    Three hour Trek (Book now)
    This is probably one of the most scenic horse rides in the world with adventure and new discovery’s at every turn. As you travel by horse back into the high country and leave the world behind you. You will enter the valley floor and amble along the cold mountain fed stream. Discover the hidden trail entering the mystic pools before riding out to the Otarama Look Out whilst viewing the incredible Canyon of the Mighty Waimakariri River and then follow the musterers trail as you descend the Waimakariri Canyon and then travel back up through the mystic forest before returning to base. This ride is suitable for all ages, riding abilities and fitness but caters also for the more experienced riders with plenty of opportunities for some faster paced riding.

  6. Sunset Trail Ride(Available during summer only)

    An evening ride along the "River Trail Ride" or the "Valley Trail Ride".Relax and view spectacular sunsets and changing colours in the landscape.

  7. "Mountain Trail Ride"
    Six hours - 4.5 hours riding (Book now)
    This ride is perfect for riders who love spending plenty of time in the saddle with a real adventure following the musterers trails. With views of the stunning Southern Alps, you will trek along the Mt Torlesse Range, which is full of exciting challenges along the way. Before reaching Patterson's Creek - which rests below the famous Trans Alpine Train route - you will descend down along rivers, forest paths, mountain crossings and valley floors, exposing you to an inspiring variety of scenery. The Waimakariri River canyon and the Canterbury plains are resplendent in their beauty. This 4.5 hour trek includes plenty of breaks and a delicious lunch and afternoon tea. This ride is suitable for all abilities; however, it is not recommended for children under 12 or people with a low level of fitness.
